I get this comment a lot. A lot. This is not a humble-brag, though I’ve been accused of that too when I complain. It’s just a fact. When I interact with the public and reveal that I am a college professor I’m usually met with a very skeptical, “but you look too young to teach college!?!”
I’m never quite sure how to respond. Lately I’ve taken to saying, “I get that a lot” with a smile and then leaving it at that.
As far as I’m concerned, I look the oldest I have ever looked. I have some gray hairs. Fine lines that certainly weren’t there five years ago. I’m a good 20 pounds heavier than I was 10 years ago (alas).
I think when it happens next I’ll ask just how young they think I look. I overheard some students discussing my age and they decided I must be 27 (I’m 32). But they came to that conclusion after doing some math based on knowledge of my 2 kids. I wonder how old perfect strangers guess me to be. I’m sure the chance to find out will present itself soon.
